El Salvador 2017

Welcome to the 2017 El Salvador Mission Trip site!

On February 17-24, 2017, we will be taking our 2nd annual El Salvador Mission Trip. We will be going to Los Naranjos. We are so excited to join other YL areas in building relationships with the people of this town. We will be doing work projects, running a medical clinic, and running Young Life clubs in the town.

We will be joining up with Syracuse East, Rochester East, and Buffalo North, Buffalo South Young Life. We have 8 kids/leaders from our area going. Altogether we will take 150 students and adult leaders on what has been a long standing trip for these areas. I feel blessed and excited that we are able to partner with these areas and provide kids with what will be a life changing experience.

On this trip we will have a great deal to offer the people who live in Los Naranjos, a rural town in El Salvador. Over the past few years this trip has provided two new wells for clean drinking water, bikes and trucks for transportation, medical and school supplies, as well as a new Young Life ministry for kids in El SalvadorWe are looking forward to providing some of these things for our town. The scope of this trip goes well beyond what we have to offer the people of Los Naranjos. Our kids and leaders will experience first hand what living in a third-world community is like. I can honestly say that what we give is very small when compared to what we are given. We are given a new perspective on money, poverty, friendship, family, faith, thankfulness, and in reality a new perspective on life.

If you would like to partner with us in anyway, please email Steve Abbey at

Health information

When traveling to any location outside of the US there are steps that you must take in order to stay healthy. The link below is for the official website that shows which immunizations you should have when traveling to El Salvador.

Most of these are routine vaccines and you may already have them, but it is also important to have a flu shot because we don't want to bring the flu into El Salvador either.

We also have access to a 'travel' doctor who can answer any health related questions, so if you have any concerns please contact us and we can put you in touch with him or ask on your behalf.

passport information

Having a valid passport will be a requirement for traveling to El Salvador. There is a link below that should have all the information to get started on this process if you do not have a passport yet or you have an expired passport:

Please keep in mind that getting a passport can take some time, so once you have been approved to go on the trip, please start that process as soon as possible.

meeting #1

We just had the first meeting for the upcoming trip to El Salvador. If you were not able to make it we have included a link below to download the slides from the PowerPoint presentation. Also, if there is a group that couldn't make the meeting and would like to go through the presentation again, please feel free to contact us about it.

Bulk of the time was spent on:

  • safety in the region we are going to
  • why we want to go to El Salvador
  • work in Los Naranjos (50 miles west of San Salvador)
  • partnering with Nathan's group because they have done this trip many times and will be bringing doctors with them
  • cost of trip
  • fundraising the money for the trip
  • time difference in El Salvador (2 hours)
  • answering questions

Follow up information from meeting:

  • You can download a few pictures of the school we will be staying at here: school.zipschool.zip
  • information and pictures of resort and longboats that we will be using coming soon

Please send us an e-mail using the links in the "Contact" section if you need anything else or you would like to go through the presentation if you were unable to make it.

MEETING #2

We spoke a lot about fundraising and using the letter template that Amy was kind enough to make up. You can download that at the top of the page or if you want you can get it here as well: El_Salvador_2017_fundraising_letter.docx

It is crucial that you use the letter and personalize it to the people you're going to ask for donations. This is a very big part of paying your way to El Salvador, so as painful as it may be to do a pile of letters for this, it will pay off in the long run.

  • Travel doctor contact information has been posted above in the "Health Information" section now.
  • Barn Dance tickets have been created and are ready to be printed for that fundraising effort
  • Remember to support each other before and during our trip. Find a way for more team building and hanging out before the trip to make this easier

(Meeting notes for #3 and #4 will not follow because we are meeting a representative from El Salvador and having a general meeting to discuss progress on fund raising, so notes will not be required)

MEETING #5

This is the last meeting that is happening before the packing meeting!

I have uploaded a couple of documents for reference.

The release form needs to be completed by all travelers and then submitted to Ruth before our next meeting. The packing list is good reference for what to bring on the trip (and what not to bring) to make it easier for you to have everything together before the flight out.

Please remember to have a current photocopy of your passport for Will before the packing meeting as well so we can keep those in the event that someone loses a passport. So the final 'to do' items before we meet for the packing meetings are:

  • have the rest of your fundraising money in so that you don't owe anything before the packing meeting
  •
  • make an appointment for the travel doctor if you haven't already, to have any shots like flu, etc
  •
  • complete and submit the release form above
  •
  • get any items that we discussed in the last meeting for the people of El Salvador (soccer balls, eye drops, etc)
  •
  • make sure that a photocopy of your passport (current) has been submitted to Will

Let Ruth or Will know if there are any questions.
